How a 70-Tonne Rolling Mill Housing Moves from Casting to Delivery

2026-11-01 09:44

When buying a rolling mill housing, the quote is only the first look. What really determines whether it can be put to use is the internal quality, the machined dimensions, and the set of acceptance documentation that arrives with the shipment.

A heavy-section steel casting weighing more than 70 tonnes carries risk at every step — from process design and molten steel refining to heat treatment and final inspection — and every step also reveals a manufacturer's true capability.

Henan Xintengfei Steel Casting Co., Ltd. specializes in large custom steel castings, completing casting and machining in-house in one continuous flow. Products are manufactured to the customer's drawings, material specifications, and technical requirements, and each delivery is accompanied by quality records that can be verified item by item.

I. Before Comparing Quotes, Ask These Questions First

The rolling mill housing is the load-bearing skeleton of the mill, carrying heavy loads day in and day out. If any single defect emerges — inclusions, shrinkage cavities, shrinkage porosity, or cracks — machining, assembly, and service performance can all be affected downstream. Neither rework nor downtime comes cheap.

So when evaluating a supplier, the quote is only the starting point. What material grade is required? How will heat treatment be performed? How far does machining coverage extend? Which standard will non-destructive testing follow? Every one of these must be clarified item by item. They determine cost, and they are also the basis for determining whether quotes from different suppliers can be compared on equal footing.

What matters even more is finding out how the manufacturer actually controls quality during production, and which inspection records it can present on the day of delivery.

II. Four Quality Gates — Not One Can Be Relaxed

Simulate first, then pour. Before pouring, the filling and solidification process is run through CAE simulation on a computer to identify areas prone to shrinkage cavities and shrinkage porosity, and to determine how the gating and riser system should be arranged and how the feeding scheme should be laid out. Catching process problems before production begins is far better than discovering them after the casting has cooled.

Clean steel, controllable chemistry. Xintengfei is equipped with a 100-tonne dual-station LF refining furnace, where desulfurization, deoxidation, and inclusion control are completed to bring the steel's chemistry and cleanliness in line with pouring requirements. If the steel base is not clean, no amount of downstream effort will make up for it.

Heat treatment — straightening out structure and stress. In heavy-section castings, cooling rates differ from location to location, and residual stress tends to accumulate and remain locked inside, causing distortion the moment machining begins. The heat treatment process must be individually developed according to material grade, section thickness, and technical requirements, and its sequence relative to machining must be properly arranged — if stress-relieving annealing should come first, it must come first, so that everything downstream remains stable.

Non-destructive testing — let the reports speak. In accordance with the drawings and the technical agreement, UT (ultrasonic testing) and MT (magnetic particle testing) are performed in the specified zones to detect internal, surface, and near-surface defects. The testing methods, scope, applicable standards, and acceptance levels must be defined in black and white at the time of ordering. Each inspection report corresponds one-to-one with a specific casting, so the customer can verify every item against the actual product.

III. Casting and Machining Under One Roof — Less Hassle at Acceptance

Casting, heat treatment, machining, and quality inspection are all completed within Xintengfei's own plant — no shuttling between multiple suppliers. Machining allowances, process sequencing, and the release of delivery documentation are coordinated in-house, with fewer communication links and a lower probability of errors.

At factory acceptance, the purchaser simply checks the physical product and the documentation item by item: does the appearance meet requirements, do critical dimensions pass, and do the material records and inspection records match the product?

Processes are documented, acceptance has standards, and that is the foundation for a long-term partnership.

IV. The Three Questions Buyers Ask Most Often

What mainly affects the quote?

Can defects such as shrinkage cavities and cracks be prevented in advance?

The risk can be reduced. CAE simulation to optimize the gating and riser system and the feeding scheme, combined with molten steel quality control and a sound heat treatment process, will significantly lower the probability of defects. But whether a casting can ultimately be delivered still has to be confirmed through the prescribed inspection procedures — it cannot be settled by assurance alone.

How can a supplier's manufacturing and quality-control capability be verified?

The most direct way is to visit the site and see the equipment — melting, heat treatment, machining, and testing; a walk around the plant tells you a great deal. Then randomly sample the material records, heat treatment records, dimensional inspection results, and NDT reports for the same casting, and check whether the documentation matches the physical product one for one.

If you have requirements for large custom steel castings, send over the drawings, material grades, quantities, and inspection requirements — Xintengfei can discuss the manufacturing plan, quotation, and delivery arrangements with you in detail.
